Exercise 1. Unleashing the Intranet

What does Cochrane mean by the push revolution?

The push revolution refers to the broad range of services offered by Internet content providers which are delivered directly to either their browsers or propriety software without the user needing to actively search for it. It can included things as simple as weekly emails to channel content as offered by Netscape and Microsoft

What are the features of a mission critical intranet?

A mission critical application or intranet is one which if it fails will cause the owners or users considerable cost.

A mission critical intranet has the following features:

  1. Security (External and Internal)
  2. Robustness
  3. Rendundancy
  4. Scalability

Exercise 2. Types of Intranets

Intranet special role Name URL
Marketing E-Marketing http://www.e-marketing.com/private/index.htm
Supply chain mgt Studio RTA http://www.shopdirect.com/studiorta/index.htm
Finance & accounting James D. Edge & Associates http://www.edgecpa.com
Human resource mgt SAU Affirmative Action Program http://150.208.44.6/policies/af_menu.html
Decision support / workflow mgt NetQuorum http://www.netquorum.com

Exercise 3. TCP/IP underpins intranet architecture

a. Define TCP/IP and its importance to the Internet

TCP/IP is the combination of two protocols which allows the orderly exchange of information accross a network. The original 'Internet' (ARPANET) was designed to be highly robust. The TCP/IP protocol allowed for this robustness through its design. Even if one node of the network is down or inoperable the network will continue to function.

b. Login to a TCP/IP machine like golum or athene

Not attempted

c. Why might you not have access to all TCP/IP programs on the machine?

A user may not have access to all TCP/IP programs on the machine due to the potentially damaging use of TCP/IP tools. for example, the continue pinging of a server can cause dramatic slowdowns in the response of the server.

d. Use the following command to ping the CSU Web Server

ping www.csu.edu.au

What data is provided about the TCP/IP connection?

Pinging louise.mit.csu.edu.au [137.166.201.105] with 32 bytes of data:

Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.

Ping statistics for 137.166.201.105:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum =  0ms, Average =  0ms

The output above tells me that at the time I tried the 'ping' command the host was unable to be found.

e. How is the output different to other TCP/IP programs called nslookup and traceroute?

nslookup www.csu.edu.au

Not attempted. No nslookup on Windows 98

traceroute www.csu.edu.au

Tracing route to louise.mit.csu.edu.au [137.166.201.105]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 Destination host unreachable.

Trace complete.

Exercise 4. Roles and Responsibilities

Determine Roles and Responsibiities that you see as necessary for the Intranet Project

Intranet Developer Roles and Responsibilities
Senior Management Responsible for the overall management of the Organisation. Senior Management control the funding and overall content of the page. The final version of the page will be signed off by the Senior Management Team
Intranet Management Responsible for the Management of the Intranet Development Team. They are the liason point between Senior Management and the development team. They manage the available resources to ensure the overall success of the Intranet Site. Once development is complete and the Intranet is implemented his role shifts to a day to day management role.
Web Manager Responsible for the management of the Content Development Team. This team will create the content to be displayed on the Intranet. This content can be HTML, Javascript, JAVA, or other web technologies
Gatekeepers Responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the Internal and External Security for the Intranet. They will install Firewalls, password protection and other security devices to ensure that the intranet is only available to those users who are authorised.
Web Team Responsible for the development of content for the Intranet.
